Letters Patent

Home » Lexicon » Letters Patent

Letters patent are formal legal instruments issued under the Crown’s prerogative, historically used to grant land, offices, corporate status, or other rights. They are “open letters” (as opposed to private missives), meant to be read and recognized by officials and the public. In land contexts, a Crown patent is often the final step in confirming title to a particular parcel.

For Haldimand, letters patent are part of the unfinished architecture. The committee that recognized the “faith of Government” as pledged to the Mohawk chiefs explicitly suggested an Act of the legislature or a grant under the Great Seal in favour of the chiefs or trustees “for ever.” In modern terms, this is essentially a call for letters patent or equivalent instruments to lock in Mohawk title. The fact that this step was never properly completed is not a reason to forget the promise; it is a signpost for what still needs to be done—potentially through new patent-like instruments that acknowledge hereditary beneficiaries and Mohawk law explicitly.

About Benjamin Doolittle U.E.

listen to BLOODLINE

“Bloodline” follows the Haldimand Proclamation from its original promise to the present fight to have it honoured. The track moves through Crown grants, broken commitments, and the legal and political road back to enforcement, asking listeners to hear the Proclamation not as a relic of the past, but as a living obligation that still binds the Crown to the Mohawk Nation of Grand River.
